Here’s this week’s update on sports around the world

OLYMPICS

Zika Virus

Concerns about Zika Virus infected mosquitoes seem to be increasing. Hope Solo has voiced concerns about attending the games with the current outbreak, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control is warning pregnant women to skip the games.  But there are plans in place to eradicate the mosquitoes by steralizing the male bugs.  Yep, bug birth control.  Hopefully the spread of the virus can be stopped, but either way Rio Officials will require athletes to pay for screens to keep  mosquitoes out.

Boxing

The AIBA (world governing body for boxing) is working hard to change the current rule that requires full amateur status to participate in the Olympics as a boxer.  They’re hopeful the changes will be complete in time for the Olympics.  Don’t get excited about Pac-Man or Mayyweather being at the games, but 12 other USA hopefuls are headed to Argentina for an Olympic qualifing event.

TOKYO MARATHON

 

36,000 people ran in the 10th annual Tokyo Marathon.  Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa won witha finishing time of 2:06:56.  Kenya’s Helah Kiprop set a new course record for females, finishing in 2:21:27.

Runners and fans were kept safe by Police on segways and their drones.
